Herbal medicine for pets

Western Veterinary Herbal Medicine

ArnicaWestern Veterinary Herbal Medicine, based on scientific research and phytotherapy, can be used to effectively treat animals with a wide range of conditions. Whilst it is very modern and evidence based in its approach, Western herbal medicine still values the empirical knowledge of traditional folk medicine.

Herbal medicine is a holistic treatment that considers the patient as an individual, addressing the underlying cause of the condition rather than just the symptoms. Herbal remedies support the body’s own restorative and healing systems to promote health and prevent disease.

Herbal medicine can be used to treat almost any complaint as either an adjunctive therapy or as a stand-alone treatment. Herbs are frequently used to support patients with chronic conditions and due to their nutritive value, as well as their medicinal effects.

Most herbal medicines are given internally as tinctures, alcohol-free glycetracts, or as capsules. They can also be applied externally as gels, ointments or creams.

Your visit

CatIn the initial consultation Holly will build up a complete medical health profile of your pet. She will carry out a full physical examination and take a detailed case history in which she will ask about your pet’s home environment, diet, prior medical history, family background, personality and behaviour, as well as the important, current health concerns.

This will enable Holly to prescribe a herbal medicine that will contain a range of herbs that will treat both your pet’s current problem as well as addressing their ongoing health needs.

In some cases herbal medicines can be used alongside existing conventional medications as part of an integrated approach to treatment.
