Fireworks! No Fear.

It’s a month until fireworks night, a good time to plan ahead and think about what you can do to prevent your pet from getting scared when all the loud bangs, pops and screams begin…Vets are all too used to having owners come into the surgery on November the 4th, or even 5th asking for sedatives for their pets. But there’s really no need for such heavy handed approaches for most pets, and if you have young pups or cats then it’s a prime time to start right in how you accustom them to fireworks.

Okay – so what do you need to do? Read more

Puppy Dog Tales

Allergies to food

I went to a very good vet talk at Langford last night – all about dogs and food allergies and dietary intolerances (also called AFR’s ‘Adverse Food Reactions). Lady Isabella Leigh’s recipe for strengthening the eyes

Herbal tonic for the eyes

This is a recipe for a herbal tonic that I found in the University of Bristol’s historical archives. It is from the mid 1700′s and describes ‘Lady Isabella Leigh’s recipe for strengthening the eyes’. It is amazing! It describes using Celendine and snails shells and egg whites and making a solution to bathe the eyes! Read more

Herbal tea for pets

You'll need a big old teapot

If you drink herbal tea yourself – why not share it with your cat or dog? All this means is you can add cold herb tea infusion to their meal – as they are unlikely to lap it up for themselves (but you never know – you could leave down a bowl of cooled tea as well). Read more

Acupuncture for a Pygmy goat

Basil

This is Basil the 11 year old Pygmy goat who lives with his friend Sybil (another Pygmy) in a lovely orchard. But poor Basil has been lame on his left forelimb – he holds it up and is quite stiff and lame on it first thing in the mornings. He’s had treatment and x rays at the veterinary hospital – and I am now giving him regular acupuncture treatments to help with the pain and inflammation.

He’s had quite a few treatments now (and got through lots of monkey nuts, grapes and a lot of vegetation- all bribes for standing still for the needles) and he seems to be getting benefit from it. He is walking more easily and is jumping up onto his platform and butting Sybil with much gusto! Read more
